Digging Up Some Outdoor Fun

Getting some kids outside for the summer, rather than spending a lazy day on the couch, may be easier than you think. Today’s idea for motivating activity in your kids is to provide opportunities for digging!

Do you remember trying to dig your way to China in your backyard? My kids started that dig last summer, and we still have a hole in the garden about 4 feet deep! Yesterday however, we took digging to a whole new level. My husband heard about a place in Utah, filled with Geodes. So, we woke the kids up early, and drove to the digging site. Not only was this activity a great workout for everyone, my kids got to take home the treasures they found. On the crappy side, we were in the car for more than 6 hours round trip. We got a flat tire because of the road conditions. We broke bolts from the wheel in trying to change to our spare. Then Wade spent 5 hours after getting home trying to re-attach something on our car that became detached! But hey! We now have some cool rocks. LOL

No Geodes where you live? Try these other digging ideas:

  • Invest in a sandbox this summer! My kids often spent HOURS in our sand box!
  • Go to a park that has a sandbox with small shovels or trowels.
  • Bury some treasures in your yard. Place markers out and have your kids dig for the treasure.
  • Dig for dinosaur bones or fossils. Our dinosaur museum has a digging quarry for the kids to dig through.
  • Short on space? Use a large box or bucket to bury plastic dinosaurs in. Keep it on the porch for some outside digging.
  • Plant a garden! You need some small holes dug to plant seeds of course.
  • Then for fun at night, watch the movie HOLES! Love it!
