The Texas death chamber in Huntsville.
A psychologist who examined more than a dozen Texas death row inmates for intellectual disabilities, including several who were executed, has been banned by the state from performing future evaluations.
George Denkowski reached a settlement with the state Board of Examiners of Psychologists on Thursday after other doctors and defense attorneys raised questions about his methods.
The boards order cant be used as evidence to re-evaluate defendants in cases involving Denkowski.
Denkowski admitted no wrongdoing, but agreed to stop performing intellectual disability evaluations in criminal cases. He also must pay $5,500 in fines.
The U.S. Supreme Court in 2002 banned the death penalty for people with mental retardation.
Some lawyers say all cases with Denkowskis testimony should be reviewed. He has served as a defense witness as well.
