Quick-Breads: Banana Pecan Bread

The difference between quick bread and regular bread, is quick bread doesn’t have yeast, and doesn’t need to go through the rising process. While we enjoy both kinds, quick breads are usually delicious and sweet! With today’s recipe, we included some healthy whole grains; oats and whole wheat flour. As well as some heart healthy pecans!

  • 3 bananas (mashed)
  • 1 cup low fat buttermilk
  • 3 TBL. canola oil
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar

In separate bowl, combine:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup white flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp. bakin

Gluten-Free But Not Safe

Recently, The Washington Post reported about the FDAs reluctance to make a decision about gluten-free labeling. Under a 2004 law Congress gave the FDA until 2008 to establish a standard for food manufacturers who want to use the term gluten-free in their food label.

Alessio Fasano, medical director of the Center for Celiac Research and one of the authors of new research proving the existence of gluten sensitivity at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, feels it is a no-brainer. Fasano believes that the incidence of Celiac disease is skyrocketing in this country because changes in agricultural practices have increased gluten levels in crops.

Pizza Chili Recipe

Pizza Chili is what you eat when you love, love, LOVE pizza but can do without the crust. Its a hearty soup, a pizza in a bowl, and a versatile family favorite. Its one of those wow-why-didnt-I-think-of-that? recipes. And its simple. Everybody loves pizza chili, even busy moms!

Its also the perfect avenue for getting nutrient-dense organ meats past picky palates. The last time I ordered my grass-fed beef in bulk, I asked the processing facility to grind the organ meats for me so that I could sneak them into our ground beef dishes on the off chance that their flavor wouldnt be noticeable. Good news!

The Color of Food: Artificial vs. Natural

The butter made from the milk of cows eating rapidly growing Spring grass is yellow, taking on a bright golden hue when at room temperature. Compare this to the white butter made from conventional milk. Eggs made from hens eating green pasture and fresh bugs have deep, orange yolks. Compare this to the pale yellow yolks of conventionally raised hens.

In nature, color = nutrient density. Were hardwired to respond to color. Thats why artificial colors play such a HUGE role in packaged, processed, industrial foods. Im not just talking about neon-blue and purple breakfast cereals or the orange of Cheetos.

Running together can improve marital satisfaction, experts say

  

Chris and Jane Spiteri are on the run together. The Ottawa couple have different paces and different philosophies. Still, those who run together — and fundraise together — stay together.

The Spiteris are both 47, the parents of four children between the ages of nine and 14.

My Natural Sweeteners of Choice

In the past, Ive railed against agave nectar, truvia and splenda. Ive even dogged on natural sweeteners because lets face it on a metabolic level too much sugar is bad for you.

I get it. I really do. But I still want to know which natural sweeteners you use. What do you think about maple syrup? Or raw honey? How about stevia? I get variations on this question in my inbox at least once a week, often times more. So, for those of you dying to know how I sweeten my foods, here it goes.

Agave Nectar? NOT NATURAL

Indoor cycling classes add top spin and soul

  

Indoor cyclists routinely sweat a real river pedalling down an imaginary road, but SoulCycle classes add upper body work, and a touch of the spiritual, to their metaphorical journey.

“We do push-ups on the bike, crunches on the bike, work our obliques on the bike,” said Julie Rice, who co-founded the multitasking method with Elizabeth Cutler in 2006.

“You’re burning between 500 and 700 calories in 45 minutes,” she said, “and we’ve added a toning component to the cardio by adding different types of exercises on the bike.”

Rice said indoor cycling had not been updated since fitness expert Johnny G created his trademarked Spinning classes some 20 years ago.

“(SoulCycle) is an entirely different workout,” she said from her New York office. “
